Whirl Sets

Whirl #3 from Set #9

I recently received a set of my drawings that had been in storage since 1999 from a show at the Joseph Nease Gallery in Kansas City. The show, titled WHIRL, consisted of a number of kinetic pieces installed in the main gallery. Around 20 of these drawings, originally titled OUTLINE FORMS, were installed in the back room of the gallery.

Whirl Set #8

I spent a lot of time with these drawings when I got them back in my studio this winter. I started composing arrangements, and, as a result, I have decided to group these drawings into separate portfolios. These groupings have been a way to re-enter the drawings, and as is often the case in my studio with constructed objects, an opportunity to “re-find” them and place them in a new context. Each of the drawings are 17″ by 22″ with a vertical orientation and were produced with plotter pens on vellum. The individual portfolios consist of either 3 or 4 drawings each.

A complete set of the available portfolios can be seen here.

A complete statement with process intent can be found  here.

Spring/Summer 2013

June 28th, 2013 by jameswoodfill

Light Ramp (Device) was completed in early June. The final installation was the culmination of a year long (plus) process that started with an open, national call for artists. The ongoing collaboration with the design team and my project intern, Andrew Ordonez, pushed the project into its final form. Go here for project details.

During Spring Break I was able to spend time in Omaha and build some improvisational furniture for Theaster Gates’ project at Carver Bank.

The three main pieces built for this project are the reception/office desk, repurposed from an earlier project, a kitchen table for the studios, and a separating bench located at the edge of the gallery area. These last two pieces were built from “4th floor” resources at Bemis.
